Senior Retirement Residence Helps Families Prepare For The Holidays

Senior retirement residence Clover Care Home is looking ahead to the holiday season and finding effective ways to help seniors in Kansas City get the most out of them. With Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner, while the holidays can be a time of great joy and a welcome change of pace, it can also mean increased stress for families and caregivers. Our senior retirement residence wants the holiday season to be perfect for everyone (including ourselves!).

In normal times, the holidays can be a joyful time when everyone’s spirits are lighter and they are able to spend time with loved ones, celebrating together, and sharing meals. But for many, the holidays also bring added stress. In addition, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as people’s busy schedules and the residents’ abilities, getting through the holidays at a senior retirement residence may be more difficult to pull off this year! Fortunately, we’ve been able to find ways to help our residents and their families make it through the holiday season with more joy and less stress.

There are many factors you can’t control when it comes to your loved ones’ health and abilities, but here are a few tips that can help.
  • Prioritize the holiday activities that hold the deepest meaning for your loved one. Focus on what feels most important to create peaceful feelings while creating good memories.
  • Instead of worrying about what is or isn’t possible, try doing something new.
  • Keep things simple; it doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
  • Food is a big part of many holidays, so plan to share a meal with your loved one, either at the senior retirement residence, your home, or a local Kansas City restaurant.
  • Grandchildren make every grandparent smile. Children can join their loved ones in preparing simple snacks and foods together.
  • Take your loved one through a holiday light display around the neighborhood in Kansas City.
  • Watch a holiday show on TV together.
  • If you are unable to come to the senior retirement residence, have a video chat with your family member.
  • Decorating the resident’s room for the season can enlighten their mood and be enjoyable for everyone.
  • Family members can accompany their loved ones to a religious service if they are able.
  • Help residents make greeting cards to send to family members and friends. Or if that is too time-consuming, help them send e-greetings.
  • Gift-giving is also an important part of many family traditions. If you are not local, shopping online may be an option, and many online stores will also gift-wrap. Or you might ask a friend or relative to do your shopping and wrapping for you. Gift cards or electronic devices are always popular gifts.
For most residents, the holiday season can be enhanced when family members are as involved as possible, even with restrictions in place. Time is precious, and we want you to fully savor every moment with your loved one and make good memories you can cherish forever. The gift of time can be the best gift of all!
