Elderly Long Term Care – Things To Consider When Planning

The necessity for elderly long term care for Americans is increasing so it is incumbent upon us, the ‘Baby Boomers’, to plan now. Those of you born between 1946-1964 are traditionally considered to be the baby boomer generation – almost 80% of Americans today will live past the age of 65 – with life expectancy extending another 19 years for women and 15 years for men. Currently, 6.4 million individuals aged 65 or older need elderly long term care; one in two over the age of 85 require care and assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, eating, dressing and toileting.

What it means for most of you is that you are growing older and it won’t be long before entering an elderly long term care facility becomes a reality. The most common reason for elderly long term care is chronic illnesses resulting in an increased need for assistance with the activities of daily living. When a person requires someone else to help him/her with his physical or emotional needs that healthy, active people take for granted, the financial burden can be overwhelming. Proper planning is important when the need for long term care does not exist.

The reality today for the care of our elderly is much different than past generations. Once it was the norm for the children of aged parents to take them in and care for them until their death; however, today’s adults have careers, families, and lifestyles or circumstances that may prevent them taking care of their elderly parents. The decisions about elderly long term care falls on the elderly, which is why planning while still mentally capable of making the decision is critical. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), planning for the possibility of long-term care gives you time to learn about services in your community and what they cost. It also allows you to make important decisions while you are still able.
