Dementia Nursing Care: What To Look For In Kansas City

Dementia nursing care is a specialized type of care that is provided to elderly persons with severe memory loss. Nursing homes (also called skilled nursing, long-term care, memory care and custodial care) are usually licensed by the state and regulated by the federal government.

As dementia progresses it can eventually lead to a person’s increased dependence on others and the need for supervision. Home caregivers may become unable to provide the level of care a person needs. When someone with advanced dementia is unable to remain at home, the next best option is to choose a dementia nursing care home

Choosing a nursing home that provides the appropriate type of care for dementia patients can be challenging. In Kansas City, there are different types of facilities that provide different levels of care, depending on the person’s needs. Following are suggestions for things to consider that may be helpful when looking for a dementia nursing care provider.

Be sure the nursing home is structured to provide for the special needs of each person, with appropriate safety measures in place (locked exits, video surveillance, handrails, etc). Good nutrition is important to the overall health of an elderly person, so find out if the home offers healthy nutritious meals. Check out the surroundings – are they comfortable and clean? Cleanliness is essential, especially in the kitchen and bathroom (unpleasant odors may indicate negligent patient care or poor housekeeping). It is also beneficial to choose a facility that is close enough for regular visits from the family, with convenient visiting hours.

Take a tour of the facilities you are considering and meet with the staff. Determine if the administrator and the facility are properly licensed and in compliance with all state and local regulations. Don’t hesitate to ask specific questions, such as:

  • Does the nursing home conduct background checks on the staff
  • Is the staff specifically trained in dementia care
  • Is a licensed nurse on duty at least 8 hours overnight
  • Is a doctor on staff who can be reached at all times
  • What specific services are provided to the residents (medication management, wound care, physical therapy)
  • Are protocols in place for specific issues (falling, abuse, theft)
  • Does the home have an arrangement with a hospital for emergencies?

You can learn a lot about how the facility operates and the people who staff it by observing everyday life. If the residents are clean, dressed appropriately and well-groomed, this indicates they are receiving quality dementia nursing care, especially if they look happy, are comfortable and relaxed. How do staff members interact with patients? Do they know their names, their likes and dislikes? Are they attentive and friendly, patient and kind?

Clover Care Home offers a wide range of services including 24-hour professional staff, personalized meals, numerous life enrichment opportunities in a comfortable home-like environment. It is a safe place with consistent dementia nursing care and an inviting meeting place for families to gather with their elderly loved one.
